What was on your wish list for the new year? Did it involve renovating your kitchen? A kitchen remodeling project is worth all the time, money, and effort you invest in it. But you need to prepare for it, especially if this is going to be your first kitchen remodel. Here are some ways to get you and your family ready for what’s ahead.
Rationalize the Remodel
Once you’re ready to begin the remodeling process for your kitchen, you need to rationalize it. Decide why you want to do this, besides the fact that you think your kitchen is outdated and could use a new lease on life. If you’re going to sell your home in the next five years or so, then this can help you get a higher asking price. However, your dreams might be curtailed by one obstacle: the budget.
Set Your Budget
Any time you begin a home improvement project, you’ll need a reasonable budget. Depending on how extensive the remodel will be, you’ll have different costs to consider. Installing a kitchen island will take different tools and resources than putting in new cabinets or changing the floors and finishes on the cabinets – or completing other tasks such as installing a bar sink or a pot filler.
Make Your Plans
A single weekend won’t be enough to complete your kitchen remodel, especially if it’s going to be a top-to-bottom transformation. Even as skilled and committed the contractors (or friends and family you choose to help you when you do it yourself) are, that’s not a realistic expectation. Sketch out what the new kitchen will look like, and select the appliances you want as well. That way, you will make sure all of the elements will fit together and complement one another, or at the very least, provide a pleasant contrast.
Find ways to make your kitchen more accessible, especially if you plan on aging in place in your home or someone in your family has mobility challenges. Then make sure all the materials and fixtures you want to incorporate will be in stock and ready to go before any work gets underway.
Learn How to Cope
Lastly, learn how to cope without a functional kitchen. It might be worth it to plan on having an outdoor kitchen on a covered patio ready to go before you launch the kitchen remodeling project.
